The Nations after the Trolloc Wars

The New Nations after the Trolloc Wars P101

The New Nations after the Trolloc Wars

Twenty-nine nations had arisen from the destruction of the Trolloc Wars by FY 100; they were the following:
  • Abayan - Abayan was located in the northern part of the Westlands. To the west was the Aryth Ocean, with Basharande to the northeast, Indrahar and Oman Dahar to the east, and Darmovan to the south, with the border following the path of the river Dhagon. Eventually, this area of land became what is now the northern part of Arad Doman. By FY 963, Abayan had fallen to Hawkwing.

  • Aldeshar - Aldeshar was one of the nations of the Free Era. Aldeshar was located in the central area of the Westlands. To the north was Dal Calain, with Farashelle to the west, with the Manetherendrelle forming the border. Shiota to the south, and Caembarin and Nerevan to the east. Eventually, this area of land became what is now northernmost Murandy and the western part of Andor. It was also one of the most powerful nations of the Free Era. However, around FY 943, during the War of the Second Dragon, fighting had begun in Aldeshar. Around FY 944, Aldeshar sent men to aid Caembarin against Artur Hawkwing. Aldeshar was the last nation to fall to Artur Hawkwing, by FY 963. The last king of Aldeshar before Hawkwing conquered it was Joal Ramedar, grandfather of Ishara, who became the first Queen of Andor.

  • Balasun - Balasun was located in the southeastern part of the Westlands. To the west was the Aryth Ocean, with Elan Dapor to the north, Dhowlan to the east, and Kharendor to the southeast. Eventually, this area of land became what is now Tarabon and the Shadow Coast. Guaire Amalasan had taken Balasun sometime around FY 940, less than a year and a half after proclaiming himself the Dragon Reborn in Darmovan. By FY 963, Hawkwing had conquered Balasun.

  • Basharande - It was located in the northern part of the Westlands. It was one of the then Borderlands, and its northern border touched the mountains in several places, although it also contained a number of southward bulges of varying size. All of the borders that did not reach the mountains were within sight of them. To the east was Elsalam, with Abayan to the southwest and Indrahar and Oburun to the south. Eventually, this area of land became what is now Saldaea. By FY 963, Hawkwing had conquered Balasun.

  • Caembarin - Caembarin was located in the central part of the Westlands. To the north were Roemalle and Tar Valon, with Dal Calain to the northwest, Aldeshar to the west, Nerevan and Esandara to the south, and Shandalle to the east. Eventually, this area of land became what is now part of Andor and the Caralain Grass. In the summer of FY 943, after Artur Hawkwing had captured Guaire Amalasan, Queen Nesaline of Caembarin sent armies into Shandalle. By the time winter came about, Artur Hawkwing held considerable parts of Caembarin. In the spring of FY 944, Aldeshar sent men to aid Caembarin, but to no avail.

  • Dal Calain - It was located in the central part of the Westlands. To the northwest and west was Masenashar, with the River Haevin forming the border and Roemalle to the north with the river Ivo along the border, Farashelle to the southwest, Aldeshar to the south and Caembarin to the east. Eventually, this area became what is now the Caralain Grass. Around FY 943, fighting over Guaire Amalasan had begun in Dal Calain. By FY 963, Hawkwing had conquered Dal Calain.

  • Darmovan - Darmovan was one of the nations of the Free Era. To the west was the Aryth Ocean, with Abayan to the north, separated by the river Dhagon, Oman Dahar, seperated by the river Akuum and Farashelle to the east, Dhowlan to the southeast and Elan Dapor to the south. Eventually, this area became Arad Doman and Almoth Plain. In FY 939, Guaire Amalasan first proclaimed himself the Dragon Reborn in Darmovan. Within half a year, Darmovan was his. Around this same time, the Black Fever epidemic was just reaching Darmovan, and this most likely contributed to Amalasan's rise to power. By FY 963, Darmovan had fallen to Hawkwing.

  • Dhowlan - Dhowlan was located in the southwestern part of the Westlands. To the north was Farashelle, with Shiota to the southeast, Kharendor to the south, Balasun to the southwest, Elan Dapor to the west, and Darmovan to the northwest. Eventually, this area of land became what is now known as Ghealdan. By FY 943, Guaire Amalasan had conquered Dhowlan, among other nations. By FY 963, Dhowlan had fallen to Hawkwing.

At one point in time, there was a King of Dhowlan named Garen, which is where the name for the cliff "Garen's Wall" came from. When Garen ruled, Dhowlan fought many wars against Farashelle.

  • Elan Dapor - Elan Dapor was one of the nations of the Free Era. It was located in the western part of the Westlands. To the north was Darmovan, with Dhowlan to the east, Kharendor to the southeast, Balasun to the southwest and the Aryth Ocean to the west. Eventually, this area of land became what is now northern Tarabon and the southern part of the Almoth Plain. Guaire Amalasan conquered Elan Dapor sometime around FY 940, less than a year and a half after proclaiming himself the Dragon Reborn in Darmovan. By FY 963, Elan Dapor had fallen to Hawkwing.

The New Nations after the Trolloc Wars Empty
PostSubject: The New Nations after the Trolloc Wars Continued   The New Nations after the Trolloc Wars I_icon_minitimeSun Jul 06, 2008 11:47 pm

  • Elsalam - One of the most powerful nations of its day, it encompassed the western two thirds of Arafel, nearly all of Kandor, and the land all the way south to the first major tributary of the River Erin. It included the great fortified cities of Chachin and Shol Arbela, though we do not know which was its capital, nor whether either of those cities bore the same names during the Free Years as they would in the New Era.

  • Esandara - It was located in the mid-southern part of the Westlands. To the north were Caembarin and Shandalle, with Khodomar and Talmour to the east, Moreina to the southeast, Fergansea to the south, Shiota to the southeast, and Nerevan to the northwest. Eventually, this area of land became what is now northeastern Illian, the Plains of Maredo and the Hills of Kintara.

By FY 943, Guaire Amalasan had conquered Esandara, among other nations. Within three days of the battle of Jolvine Pass, where Guaire Amalasan was captured (spring of FY 943), Elinde Motheneos marched from northern Esandara with a large force; both she and Sawyn Maculhene from Khodomar were intent on freeing Amalasan. Elinde Motheneos, in some accounts, was said to be a renegade Aes Sedai and was an expert in siege warfare. Their attack came as a surprise, and they captured at least two of the bridges at the Alindrelle Erinin and even reached the White Tower itself. However, in the end, the attack failed and both Sawyn Maculhene and Elinde Motheneos were killed attempting to free Guaire Amalasan, though it is uncertain as to whether Elinde was killed in the fighting or was executed afterwards. It is uncertain what role Elinde played in Esandara; it is possible that she governed there for Amalasan. By FY 963, Esandara had fallen to Hawkwing.

  • Farashelle - It was located in the mid-western part of the Westlands. To the north were Oman Dahar and Masenashar, with Dal Calain to the northeast, Aldeshar to the east, Shiota to the south, Dhowlan to the southeast and Darmovan to the northwest. It's northern and eastern borders were marked by the Manetherendrelle and it's eastern border by the Mountains of Mist to the south, Garen's Wall marked it from Dhowlan. Eventually, this area of land became what is now western Andor and northern Altara. By FY 943, Guaire Amalasan had conquered Farashelle, among other nations. And by FY 963, Farashelle had fallen to Hawkwing.

Sometime before the War of the Second Dragon (it is unsure exactly when), Farashelle and Dhowlan fought many wars against each other.

  • Fergansea - It was located in the southern part of the Westlands. To the north was Esandara, with Talmour to the northeast, Moreina to the east, the Sea of Storms to the south, and Shiota to the west. Eventually, this area of land became what is now Illian and the Plains of Maredo. By FY 943, Guaire Amalasan had conquered Fergansea, among other nations. By FY 963, Fergansea had fallen to Hawkwing.

According to Mat's memories, Fergansea and Moreina once went to war against each other.

  • Hamarea - Hamarea was one of the nations of the Free Era. It was located in the northwestern part of the Westlands. To the north was Rhamdashar, with Ileande to the southwest, Tova to the south and the Spine of the World to the east. Eventually, this area of land became what is now unclaimed land south of Shienar.

Hamarea was one of the most powerful nations of the Free Era. However by FY 963, Hamarea had fallen to Hawkwing.

  • Ileande - Ileande was one of the nations of the Free Era. It was located in the eastern part of the Westlands. To the north was Rhamdashar, with Hamarea to the northeast, Tova to the south, and Tar Valon to the west. Eventually, this area of land became what is now unclaimed land near Kinslayer's Dagger and Tar Valon.

In the spring of FY 944, after Guaire Amalasan had been captured and Artur Hawkwing had begun to conquer the nations of the Free Era, Ileande sent men to aid Tova, which was falling to Hawkwing. By FY 963, Ileande had fallen to Hawkwing.

  • Indrahar - It was located in the northwestern area of the Westlands. To the west was Abayan, with Basharande to the north, Oburun to the east, Masenashar to the southeast, and Oman Dahar to the south. Eventually, this area of land became what is now eastern Arad Doman, near the northern most end of the Mountains of Mist. By FY 963, Indrahar had fallen to Hawkwing.

  • Kharendor - Kharendor was one of the nations of the Free Era. It was located in the southwestern part of the Westlands. To the northwest was Balasun, with Dhowlan to the north, Shiota to the west and the Sea of Storms to the south. Eventually, this area of land became what is now the eastern part of the Shadow Coast and surrounding land. By FY 943, Guaire Amalasan had conquered Kharendor. BY FY 963, Kharendor had fallen to Hawkwing.

  • Khodomar - It was located in the eastern part of the Westlands. To the north were Shandalle and Tova, with the Spine of the World to the east, Talmour to the south, Esandara to the west, and Caembarin to the northwest. Eventually, this area of land became what is now unclaimed land north of Haddon Mirk.

In FY 943, Khodomar was in danger of falling to Guaire Amalasan. In the spring of this year, Artur Hawkwing was moving south out of Tova, across the Maraside Mountains, to join the fighting in Khodomar.

Within three days of the battle of Jolvine Pass, where Guaire Amalasan was captured (spring of FY 943), Sawyn Maculhene, a cavalry leader of "both daring and skill", left Khodomar with fifty thousand men. Both he and Elinde Motheneos from Esandara were intent on freeing Amalasan. Their attack came as a surprise, and they captured at least two of the bridges at the Alindrelle Erinin and even reached the White Tower itself. However, in the end, the attack failed. Sawyn Malculhene died in the fighting.

After Amalasan was gentled, men and women who had risen to power with him struggled to hold onto power in several nations, Khodomar included.

In the summer of FY 943, King Tefan of Khodomar, along with the Queen of Caembarin and the First Counselor of Tova, sent armies into Shandalle, Artur Hawkwing's homeland. By the winter of FY 943, Artur Hawkwing held considerable parts of Khodomar, as well as of Caembarin and Tova. In the early winter/spring of FY 944, Talmour sent aid to Khodomar, but it was to no avail.

  • Masenashar - Located near the central part of the Westlands. To the north was Oburun, with Roemalle to the east, Dal Calain to the southeast, Farashelle to the south, Oman Dahar to the west, and Ito the northwest. Eventually, this area of land became what is now unclaimed land in around the Black Hills.

Around FY 943, fighting over Guaire Amalasan had begun in Masenashar. By FY 963, Masenashar had fallen to Artur Hawkwing.

It is mentioned in "The World of Robert Jordan's 'The Wheel of Time'" that sometime around 450 AB there was a Queen of Masenashar named Sulmara. Apparently, she was a renegade Aes Sedai. It is said that the details differ in various versions of this story, but in the end, all of the stories agree that upon capture, Sulmara spend the rest of her life working in the stables of Tar Valon. However, the date for this occurrence, 450 AB, must be wrong because this would place it during the time of the Compact of Ten Nations, before the Trolloc Wars. It is possible that this actually happened around 450 FY and that it was a typo.

  • Moreina - It was located in the southeastern part of the Westlands. To the north was Talmour, with the Spine of the World to the east, the Sea of Storms to the south, Fergansea to the west and Esandara to the northwest. Eventually, this area of land became what is now Tear and the southern part of Haddon Mirk.

By FY 943, Guaire Amalasan had conquered Moreina. Only the Stone of Tear in Moreina resisted, and then only because thirty Aes Sedai were within when the rest of the nation fell. By FY 963, Moreina had fallen to Artur Hawkwing. It was the only nation not to be taken by conquest; the High Governor of the Stone of Tear declared for Hawkwing, and dissident nobles rebelling pretty much gave him the rest of Moreina.

According to Mat's memories, Moreina and Fergansea once went to war against each other.

  • Nerevan - Nerevan was one of the nations of the Free Era. It was located in the mid-southern part of the Westlands. To the north was Caembarin, with Esandara to the east, Shiota to the southwest, and Aldeshar to the northwest. Eventually, this area of land became what is now most of Murandy and part of southern Andor. By FY 943, Guaire Amalasan had conquered Nerevan, among other nations. By FY 963, Nerevan had fallen to Hawkwing.

  • Oburun - It was located in the northwestern area of the Westlands. To the north was Basharande and Elsalam, with Roemalle to the southeast, Masenashar to the south, Oman Dahar to the southwest and Indrahar to the west. Eventually, this area of land became part of what is now the Black Hills. By FY 963, Oburun had fallen to Hawkwing.

  • Oman Dahar - It was located in the western part of the Westlands. To the northwest was Abayan, with Indrahar to the north, Oburun to the northeast, Masenashar to the east, Farashelle to the southeast and Darmovan to the southwest. Eventually, this area of land became what is now part of Arad Doman and the Mountains of Mist. By FY 963, Oman Dahar had fallen to Hawkwing.

  • Roemalle - Roemalle was one of the nations of the Free Era. It was located in the northern part of the Westlands. To the north was Elsalam, with Tar Valon to the east, Caembarin and Dal Calain to the south, and Masenashar and Oburun to the west. Eventually, this area of land became what is now part of the area around the Black Hills and the Caralain Grass. By FY 963, Roemalle had fallen to Hawkwing.

  • Rhamdashar - One of the most powerful nations of its day, it encompassed the whole of the New Era nations of Shienar and Malkier as well as the eastern third of Arafel. It included the great fortified cities of Malkier and Fal Moran, though we do not know which was its capital, nor whether either of those cities bore the same names during the Free Years as they would in the New Era.

The New Nations after the Trolloc Wars Empty
PostSubject: The New Nations after the Trolloc Wars Continued   The New Nations after the Trolloc Wars I_icon_minitimeSun Jul 06, 2008 11:49 pm

  • Shandalle - It was located in the central part of the Westlands. To the north was unclaimed land that eventually led to Tar Valon, with Tova to the east seperated by the Alguenya, Khodomar to the southeast, Esandara to the southwest, and Caembarin to the west separated by the Erinin. Eventually, this area of land became what is now western Cairhien.

The banner of Shandalle consisted of three golden hawks in flight.

Shandalle was relatively small, and was not included among the "powerful" nations of the Free Era. However, it was the homeland of Artur Hawkwing, which gives it a rather prominent place in history and us a fair amount of information on it.

In FY 912, Artur Paendrag Tanreall was born to King Myrdin Paendrag Maregore and Queen Mailinde Paendrag Lyndhal. In FY 939, an epidemic of the Black Fever swept through Shandalle (and possibly other nations), killing approximately one tenth of the population, including Myrdin and Mailinde. Artur, along with his first wife, Amaline Tagora, became the King and Queen of Shandalle.

In the spring of FY 940, Shandalle sent an army to battle against Guaire Amalasan. Although, as mentioned before, Shandalle wasn't an incredibly powerful nation, it had, up to this point, managed to stay independent and fend off all invasions by its neighbors in previous years. Other nations soon learned that Artur Paendrag Tanreall and the nation of Shandalle were able to consistently match Amalasan's forces.

In the summer of FY 943, after Guaire Amalasan's capture, forces were sent to Shandalle by Queen Nesaline of Caembarin, King Tefan of Khodomar, and First Counselor Almindhra of Tova. Their intent was to conquer Shandalle. Artur Hawkwing fought back, and by late FY 943, he held parts of all three nations. When, in FY 944, Aldeshar, Ileande and Talmour sent aid to Caembarin, Khodomar and Tova, Artur Hawkwing proceeded to conquer the Westlands.

  • Shiota - Shiota was one of the nations of the Free Era. It was located in the southern part of the Westlands. To the north was Aldeshar, with Nerevan to the northeast, Esandara to the east, Fergansea to the southeast, the Sea of Storms to the south, Dhowlan to the west, and Farashelle to the northwest. Eventually, this area of land became what is now Altara.

By FY 943, Amalasan had conquered Shiota, among other nations. By FY 963, Shiota had fallen to Hawkwing.

Throughout the series, there are several mentions of Shiota. Birgitte mentions that there were many "feather-dancers" in Shiota. A poet named Kyera Termendal, from Shiota, wrote a translation of The Prophecies of the Dragon somewhere between the years of FY 700 and FY 800. The stash of angreal that Elayne and Nynaeve find apparently date back to Shiota, and further back to Eharon, and even to the Age of Legends.

Elayne, Nynaeve and company ride past a statue of a Shiotan Queen as they ride to the Kin's farm. Apparently, records claim that now-worn statue had worn little but armor, and Elayne is aghast to hear this.

Rand and Bashere ride past a statue of what was probably a Shiotan Queen. Among the remnants of the statue is the head, wearing a crown of up-thrusting daggers. Bashere says that he recalls that Shiotans gave crowns like that to rulers who expanded Shiota's borders.

  • Talmour - It was located in the southeastern part of the Westlands. To the north was Khodomar, with the Spine of the World to the east, Moreina to the south, Fergansea to the southeast, and Esandara to the east. Eventually, this area of land became what is now Haddon Mirk.

In 943 FY, Talmour was in danger of falling to Guaire Amalasan. In the spring of this year, Artur Hawkwing was moving south out of Tova, across the Maraside Mountains, to join the fighting in Khodomar.

In the spring of FY 944, after Guaire Amalasan had been captured and Artur Hawkwing had begun to conquer the nations of the Free Era, Talmour sent men to aid Khodomar, which was falling to Hawkwing, but it was to no avail. By FY 963, Talmour had fallen to Hawkwing.

Throughout the series, there are a couple of mentions of Talmour. One of the legendary Hunters of the Horn (and also a Hero of the Horn), Rogosh Eagle-eye, was from Talmour. Birgitte also remarks that Talmouri maidens were very proper.

  • Tova - Tova was one of the nations of the Free Era. It was located in the eastern part of the Westlands. To the north, separated by the Alguenya, were Ileande and Hamarea, with the Spine of the World to the east, Khodomar to the south, Shandalle to the west, again, seperated by the Alguenya, and Tar Valon to the southwest. Eventually, this area of land became what is now Cairhien.

In the spring of FY 943, Artur Hawkwing was moving south out of Tova, across the Maraside Mountains, to join the fighting in Khodomar. In the summer of FY 943, First Counselor Almindhra of Tova, along with King Tefan of Khodomar and Queen Nesaline of Caembarin, sent armies into Shandalle, Artur Hawkwing's homeland. By the winter of FY 943, Hawkwing held nearly half of Tova and parts of Caembarin and Khodomar. In the early winter/spring of FY 944, Ileande sent men to aid Tova, but it was to no avail.

Throughout the series, there are a few mentions of Tova. Birgitte claims that, because people expect so much of her, she feels like "a feather-dancer walking into a Tovan conclave." Birgitte also complains that Elayne preaches like a Tovan Councilor if she ogles a man for longer than a heartbeat

From his memories, Mat recalls that Tovans were "a stark and disapproving people, abstemious to the point of pain"

"Who would sup with the mighty must climb the path of daggers," was an anonymous notation that was found inked into the margin of a manuscript that dates back to the last days of the Tovan Conclaves
